One of the many things I’ve learned this week: I will never buy plain, run-of-the-mill olive oil again. Zoe, a family business that specializes is gourmet food items, was kind enough to send a collection of olive oils and foods my way. The first item that I experienced was their olive oil. Notice that I said experienced – their gourmet items offer much more than just sustenance. One of the products I received contains the simple yet striking motto “Zoe means life. Enjoy life.” This business is oriented as follows:
Our efforts are dedicated to these discerning consumers: seeking and demanding products possessing authenticity of origin, truth in production, and sustainability of the environment.
I was able to try three of the olive oils offered by Zoe: the Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the Diva Select Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and the Zoe for Kids Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Extra Virgin Olive Oil is produced from olives that are grown in Spain. This olive oil is award winning, with reason! The New York Times recently labeled it both “Best Choice” and “Fruitiest Oil.” Of the three olive oils, it is my favorite. The flavor that it offers is striking and full-bodied. I can almost imagine eating an olive while tasting this oil. My instant reaction to trying this oil was that I wanted to pair with fresh herbs – it is the perfect dipping oil. I will absolutely be purchasing this oil in the future, though I will probably try the organic version.
The Diva Select Extra Virgin Olive Oil, made of olives grown in California, has a richer flavor than I have ever tasted before in an olive oil. It is described as “a harmonious symphony of flavors: delicate freshh fruit, luscious butter, with hints of apple, artichoke, and almond.” The complexity is remarkable – I was never able to quite put my finger on the tastes that I was experiencing, though I really enjoyed attempting to distinguish the flavor hints.
The Zoe for Kids Organic Olive Oil is certainly not for kids only. It has a “fresh, fruity flavor” that appeals to kids, but I absolutely love it as well. It is light and refreshing. I instantly liked the tin that it is packaged in – it makes the product especially memorable, as I’ve never seen oil packaged in a tin before (though it did take a few minutes to figure out).
I used the three oils for sauteing and baking. Each offered its own unique flavor without being overpowering. I am excited to report that my cooking just got a whole lot more sophisticated. Speaking of sophisticated, I also used Zoe’s Diva Select Sherry Vinegar Reserva to make a fabulous vinaigrette. I’ve never had sherry vinegar before and was clueless as to what to do with it. Thankfully I found a recipe in The New York Times that was was quick and easy to whip up (just my style). This sherry vinegar helped produce the best vinaigrette that I’ve ever tasted – it was the perfect amount of sweet and tangy and my husband was eager to save the recipe. I imagine that this had a lot to do with the Diva Select Sherry Vinegar which is produced in Spain and aged for 2 years.
In addition to the spectacular olive oils and sherry vinegar, I also tried Zoe’s Diva Select Ventresca tuna. According to the website, “Ventresca tuna is considered the foie gras of tuna. It’s the silky smooth belly of the tuna known in sushi bars as toro. These buttery, incredibly light strips are the most sensual bits of tuna you’ll ever take out of a can.” I can attest to this one hundred percent. This tuna, canned in hand-cut fillet strips after being line caught in Spain, is absolutely delightful. The kind of delicious that makes you close your eyes when eating something. The flavor is delicate and it begs to be savored.
These products are all worthy of five stars in my opinion. Check out Zoe for yourself – I’m certain that you’ll agree.
